Too often, seniors living on fixed incomes face impossible choices. Do they pay their utility bill or buy groceries? Do they pay for prescription medications, or do they buy food? These are choices none of us should have to make.

November 2024

As you read the stories in this newsletter, you might note a common theme: families are trying to pay their bills, keep up with high costs and still put enough food on their tables. That’s particularly true for those on limited incomes and people who simply can’t find steady work even though they’re doing all they can for their families.

Fall is nearly here. Children will soon be returning to school, and each of us will begin a new chapter filled with challenges, big and small. However, families facing hunger aren’t able to enjoy the changes this new season brings. Thinking about buying school supplies and new clothing is extra stressful when you are working to put food on the table. A nourishing meal is a basic comfort that’s at risk in far too many households here in central and western Oklahoma.

As spring turns to summer, many of us, and our kids, start to think about summer vacations, swimming pools, grilling out and travel. It’s a great time to take a break from the routines of the school year. It’s a great break, that is, unless you have children who rely on accessing free meals at school

That’s why this issue of The Link features children and the people who are working to help them.

Recent statistics from Feeding America estimate that 5.5 million people age 60 and over experience hunger in the United States. That’s 1 out of every 14 seniors across the country.

Every state is home to older adults who face hunger, and Oklahoma is no exception.

As you read the stories in this newsletter, you might note a common theme: People running out of money near the end of every month.

That’s particularly true for Oklahomans on limited incomes; their Social Security and/or disability checks, even combined with SNAP benefits, can only stretch so far.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our work, and we’re so grateful for every one.

Many volunteers are especially grateful to be making a dent in the problem of childhood hunger. Nobody wants a child to go to bed hungry. I’m sure you feel the same.

Summer is almost here, and for many children that means swimming pools, cookouts and vacations. Summer is the best time of year for many children.

Sadly, for other children, summer is a time of added hunger. For families already having a hard time putting food on the table, summer is that much harder
