Police, Firefighters Host Knockout Hunger Event

Nov. 12, 2009

OKLAHOMA CITY – Metro area public servants and McSalty's Pizza and Grill are hosting the Knockout Hunger event on Friday, November 13, benefitting the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

A Wii boxing competition between teams of firemen and policemen will run from 6:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight. McSalty's Pizza and Grill, 3000 N. Portland. Donations in support of each team are encouraged and 10 percent of all restaurant proceeds that evening will go to the Regional Food Bank.

On Saturday, a group of volunteer policemen and firemen will sort food as part of the Regional Food Bank's "Big Sort Day" and McSalty's will provide all volunteers pizza for lunch.

"We know about hunger and the results of malnutrition, and we choose to do something about it," said Randy Pluto, founder of Open Minds Consulting and organizer of the Knockout Hunger event. "We welcome any and all to join our great public servants and help us knockout hunger in Oklahoma."

There are more than 500,000 Oklahomans at risk of going hungry every day, including 1 in every 5 children in Oklahoma. The Regional Food Bank provides enough food to feed more than 63,000 hungry Oklahomans each week, and yet it is still not enough to keep up with the demand.

"Every dollar raised makes a difference in the life of a hungry Oklahoman," said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. "The Knockout Hunger event will enable the Regional Food Bank to reach even more families, seniors and children in need this holiday season. We are grateful for the support of the policemen, firemen and their sponsors in the fight against hunger in our state."

To participate, or to make a donation, please go to McSalty's or call 405.943.3637.
