Volunteers Needed to Fight Childhood Hunger
Pack Summer Feeding Meals at Regional Food Bank
June 20, 2013
OKLAHOMA CITY – The Regional Food Bank is in need of volunteers weekday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon to help pack food for their Summer Feeding program. The Regional Food Bank’s Summer Feeding Program provides breakfast and/or lunch for students 18 and under over the summer months when school is out.
“For thousands of children, the end of school means three long months of wondering whether or not they will have enough food to eat,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank. “The Summer Feeding Program helps bridge that gap until school meals are available again in the fall. But the program depends on volunteers to assemble the food sacks on a daily basis.”
The Regional Food Bank currently needs 10 to 20 volunteers every morning to assist with assembling food sacks that are then distributed through the Summer Feeding sites. To volunteer, visit regionalfoodbank.org/volunteer and complete the online registration form.
Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. Last year, more than 44,000 volunteers donated their time to the Regional Food Bank. Nearly 32 percent of all food that comes through the Food Bank’s warehouse is worked by volunteers.
Last summer, the Regional Food Bank provided more than 166,000 meals at 63 sites to children through the Summer Feeding program, which includes the federal Summer Food Service Program, and a private Feeding Our Future program sponsored by Sodexo.
