Vote Online to Help the Regional Food Bank Win $45,000

Walmart Grant Fights Childhood Hunger

April 3, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is turning to the community to help them click their way to a $45,000 grant from Walmart.  The Regional Food Bank is asking Oklahomans to visit regionalfoodbank.org and click on the Walmart carousel to vote for the hunger-fighting nonprofit.  The Food Bank with the most votes at the end of the Facebook campaign will be awarded the $ $45,000.  Individuals can vote once a day, every day between now and April 30.

Funding for child hunger programs is especially critical given the significant need that exists. According to the USDA, more than 16 million children in the United States live in food insecure situations.  In Oklahoma, one in four children struggles with hunger.

“Oklahomans can join us in the fight against childhood hunger by a click of the mouse,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  “We need your help to win $45,000 to help fight childhood hunger through our Food for Kids programs.  Please vote today to ensure chronically hungry children are fed tomorrow.”

The Regional Food Bank fights childhood hunger in central and western Oklahoma through Food for Kids.  This hunger initiative consists of the Backpack, School Pantry, Kids Cafe, and Summer Feeding Programs to ensure that children receive hope, in the form of food, over the weekend and when school is not in session.

“The School Pantry program is improving both attendance and contributing to improved grades!” shared one Food for Kids Coordinator.  “One student told us that because of the food the pantry provided he was able to eat dinner all five nights of the week for the first time in several months.”

The Walmart voting campaign is a part of Walmart’s "Fighting Hunger Together" initiative - a national campaign where money is awarded to programs that get the most votes for their innovative and effective programs that help alleviate child hunger.  Thanks to this campaign, more than 300 hunger relief organizations from across the country are participating in the voting campaign.  At the conclusion of the voting, top vote getters will split $3 million in funding from Walmart.

Walmart plans to award money to 100 Feeding America network food banks and their partner agencies. The first 40 food banks will receive $45,000 each while the next 60 agencies receive $20,000 each, according to a news release. Winners are announced in May.
