Easter Ham Giveaway Benefits Hungry Oklahomans

Lawyers to Donate 1,400 Hams to Families this Easter

March 26, 2013

OKLAHOMA CITY – On the heels of three consecutive years in which Oklahoma trial lawyers have given away a combined 11,000 turkeys to Oklahoma families, McIntyre Law and Lawyers Against Hunger have teamed together to co-sponsor an event in which 1,400 Easter Hams will be distributed to families on March 27 through a partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.

The hams will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis on Wednesday, March 27th at McIntyre Law Offices, located at 8601 S. Western Ave in Oklahoma City.  Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with ham distribution beginning at noon.  One ham will be given away per family until all hams are gone. There will also be free hamburgers, hot dogs and sodas served at the event to everyone in attendance.

“Over 100 different law firms throughout the state contributed funds for this past year’s Thanksgiving event resulting in a fundraising effort that exceeded $80,000 which was utilized to purchase turkeys and food boxes for Oklahomans across the state,” said Oklahoma City Attorney Noble McIntyre.  “The Thanksgiving giveaway will always be our signature event, but this year we wanted to do something to assist families at Easter as well.  Funds provided to Lawyers Against Hunger by my fellow lawyers will be used to purchase 1,400 hams which will be distributed to the first 1,400 families that come to my office on Wednesday, March 27.  McIntyre Law will co-sponsor the event and provide free hamburgers and drinks to every person who comes by.  I would like to thank the Oklahoma City Fire Department, United States Air Force and the Oklahoma City Police Department who have agreed to assist with distribution and logistics.”

Norman Attorney David Bernstein, who has hosted the Norman distribution site for the past two Thanksgiving turkey giveaways is looking forward to the event.

“Once again, I want to thank my fellow trial lawyers for donating money to help the less fortunate,” said Bernstein.  “I also want to thank the Regional Oklahoma Food Bank, McIntyre Law for co-sponsoring the event and all the volunteers that help make this great event giving back to the community possible.”

Last November, Oklahoma trial lawyers statewide teamed with Lawyers Against Hunger to raise more than $80,000 for the purpose of purchasing turkeys to giveaway to families in Oklahoma City, Norman, El Reno and Tulsa for families struggling with hunger during the holiday season.  Now, for the first time, a program to meet the needs of families will occur around the Easter holiday as well.

Oklahoma ranks among the top five states in the nation in the number of people who are hungry. In fact, one in six Oklahomans struggles with hunger every day.

“The majority of those served by the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma are children, seniors living on fixed incomes and working families,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma.  “These hams will provide a valuable source of protein that is often sacrificed when Oklahomans have to choose between paying rent and utilities or buying food.”
