Students Pass the Test Against Hunger
Student Food Drive Feeds the Hungry in Oklahoma
December 9, 2012
OKLAHOMA CITY – The eighth annual Students Against Hunger food and fund drive, which was coordinated through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, raised more than 203,000 pounds and nearly $60,000, which will provide nearly 500,000 meals to the hungry this winter.
Statewide, more than 175 schools participated in the drive. Schools recognized for raising the most donations include: Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School for raising more than 76,000 pounds of food; Heritage Hall Middle School for collecting 28,560 pounds of food; and Bethany Earl Harris Elementary for raising 8,274 pounds of food.
“Support in the fight against hunger in Oklahoma is vital now more than ever,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director and founder of the Regional Food Bank. “One in six Oklahomans struggles with hunger every day. Thanks to these schools, parents and students, more Oklahomans will have food on their table this winter.”
The Regional Food Bank provides enough food to help feed more than 90,000 people each week. The majority of those served by the nonprofit are children, seniors living on fixed incomes, and working families who cannot make ends meet. Yet, it is not enough to meet the need.
“As social security is our only income, the food has helped us tremendously,” said one client of the Regional Food Bank. “With the higher utilities, groceries, and Medicare cuts, the money just does not stretch as far as I needed and it is getting harder and harder.”
It’s not too late to make a difference this holiday season. Through January 15th, Chesapeake will match all tax-deductible donations made to the Regional Food Bank - up to $1 million! Donations will have twice the impact on the fight against hunger. Now, every dollar donated will provide 10 meals to those in need. The Students Against Hunger food drive is presented by the Oklahoma County Bar Association – Young Lawyers Division, Devon Energy Corporation and Chesapeake Energy Corporation.
