Thanks for Giving
Lawyers to Donate 1,700 Turkeys to Metro Families this Thanksgiving
November 7, 2011
OKLAHOMA CITY - Thanks to Lawyers Against Hunger, 1,700 turkeys will be distributed to families in Oklahoma City and Norman before Thanksgiving through a partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. Statewide, Lawyers Against Hunger raised more than $58,000 for the purpose of purchasing turkeys to giveaway to families in Oklahoma City, Norman and Tulsa who are struggling with hunger.
“I started this event last year after seeing a story on the news about a family that was going to do without a Thanksgiving meal due to finances,” said Oklahoma City Attorney Noble McIntyre. “I’ve never missed a Thanksgiving meal and don’t expect too many of my lawyer friends have either. This was one area we could give back and make a difference. Last year’s event provided food for more than 4,500 hungry Oklahomans. This year’s event will be even bigger."
The turkeys will be distributed (one per family) on a first come, first serve basis in Oklahoma City on Thursday, November 17 at the offices of McIntyre Law, 6801 South Western beginning at 1pm; and in Norman on Friday, November 18 at the offices of David Bernstein, Attorney at Law, 104 West Gray Street beginning at 12:00 noon. Local fire department and military personnel will be on hand to help hand out the Thanksgiving turkeys at both locations.
"It is very fulfilling to give back to the community,” said Norman Attorney David Bernstein. “Thanks to donations from attorneys and local businesses in Cleveland County to Lawyers Against Hunger, as well as the invaluable assistance, we are receiving from the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, we have expanded the turkey giveaway to Cleveland County to make sure local families do not go hungry on Thanksgiving.”
Oklahoma ranks among the top five states in the nation in the number of people who are hungry. In fact, one in seven Oklahomans struggles with hunger every day.
“The majority of those served by the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma are children, seniors living on fixed incomes and working families,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma. “These turkeys will provide a valuable source of protein that is often sacrificed when you have to choose between paying your rent and utilities or buying food.”
